Staying connected on the go

As technology develops and demand to access anything from anywhere increases, mobile broadband is relied upon more and more.

Whether it’s using a smartphone or tablet, cellular data networks provide freedom and flexibility to people who want to stay connected, on the go.

The pros of mobile broadband

  1. FaceTime, WhatsApp and the continued rise of social media, has transformed the way people stay in touch on the go. Bridging geographical barriers, individuals can stay connected with friends, family, and colleagues regardless of their location. This instant communication helps to foster stronger relationships, facilitates collaboration within work teams, and provides invaluable support networks.
  2. Mobile technology helps socio-economic development, empowering entrepreneurs, improving access to healthcare and education, and helping to drive financial inclusion through mobile banking and digital payments.
  3. Mobile connectivity plays a pivotal role in helping support emergency response and disaster management. During natural disasters or humanitarian crises, mobile networks enable authorities to disseminate critical information, coordinate rescue efforts, and provide support services to affected areas. In this way, mobile connectivity serves as a lifeline.

The downsides

However, as we reap the rewards of mobile connectivity, it’s essential to address the challenges that come with its use.

  1. The ever-widening digital divide – the gap between those with access to the internet and without – is deepened as technology advances, people do more online and services change with the demand. There’s a continued risk of vulnerable people being left behind from the health, education and financial benefits being online can bring.
  2. Whilst mobile broadband networks are growing, there are still areas that do not have coverage or may only be serviced by one provider. It’s also difficult to get accurate information on mobile coverage as often what is reported isn’t reflected in reality.
  3. The link between being online regularly and a low mood, has been widely publicised in recent years, as people take more care of their mental health. A digital detox can help to provide a break from the internet and devices.
