Ending your broadband contract early
In today’s digital world, having a reliable broadband connection is essential for staying connected with friends and family, working from home, and accessing online services. However, if you’re unhappy with your current broadband provider or you’ve found a better deal elsewhere, you may be wondering if you can terminate your contract early.
Early termination fees
In most cases, you will have to pay a penalty if you cancel your broadband contract before the end of the agreed term. The cost of the penalty will vary depending on your provider and the length of time remaining on your contract. Some providers may also charge you for any equipment that they have supplied you with, such as a router or modem.
When fees don’t apply
There are a few circumstances in which you may be able to leave your broadband contract penalty-free:
- If you’re within the cooling-off period: When you first sign up for a broadband contract, you usually have a 14-day cooling-off period during which you can cancel without penalty, for any reason.
- Changes to the terms of your contract: If your provider makes significant changes to the terms of your contract, such as increasing the price or reducing the speed of your broadband, you may be able to cancel your contract without paying a fee.
- If there’s a fault with your service: If your broadband provider is unable to provide you with the minimum download and upload speeds that are specified in your contract, you may be able to end your contract penalty-free.
How to cancel your contract early
If you decide to leave your broadband contract early, you should contact your provider. They may be willing to offer you a better deal or waiver the termination fee depending on your reasons for cancellation.
If you’re not able to reach an agreement with your provider, you will need to pay the early termination fee.
