Are you missing out on cheap social broadband?

Social-TariffsAccording to the latest data from Ofcom (2025/2026), between 4 million and 5.3 million UK households are eligible for social tariffs, but take-up remains below 10%.  Despite the potential savings, research from Ofcom shows that only about 532,000 households have switched, meaning millions are still overpaying.

What is a social tariff?

A social tariff is a low-cost broadband contract reserved for people receiving certain government benefits. These packages provide broadband at a reduced monthly price.

Key benefits of switching

  • Lower monthly costs: Prices typically range from £10 to £23 per month.
  • No mid-contract price rises social tariffs are exempt from the annual price hikes that affect standard broadband contracts. Most major providers like BT, Sky, Virgin Media, and Vodafone have confirmed that their social tariff prices remain fixed for the duration of the contract term.
  • Flexible terms: Many providers offer shorter contracts (such as 30-day rolling terms) and allow you to leave without paying early exit fees.
  • Minimal setup fees: Most social tariffs have little to no upfront cost to get connected.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility varies by provider, but you will generally qualify if you or someone in your household receives one of the following:

  • Universal Credit
  • Pension Credit
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance

Some providers, such as Vodafone, also extend eligibility to those receiving Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

How to apply

If you are already with a major provider like BT, Sky, or Virgin Media, you can often switch to their social tariff immediately without paying a penalty for ending your current contract.

  1. Check your current provider: Visit their website or call their customer service team to ask about broadband plans with social tariffs or by name.
  2. Verify your status: Providers will ask for your consent to run a quick, automated check with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to confirm you receive qualifying benefits.
  3. Compare deals: If your current provider does not offer a social tariff, use the Ofcom list of social tariffs to find a better deal in your area.

Notes on switching while “locked in”

If you are currently in a contract and find you are eligible for a social tariff, the path to switching depends on whether your current provider offers one:

  • If your provider has a social tariff: Major providers (including BT, Sky, Virgin Media, and Vodafone) allow you to move from your standard plan to their social tariff at any time without paying an early exit fee. The switch is typically processed immediately, and your monthly bill will drop from the next payment cycle.
  • If your provider does not have a social tariff: If you want to move to a different company to access a social tariff, you may still be liable for early termination charges. However, it is always worth calling your provider’s “retentions” or “vulnerability” team; under Ofcom guidance, they are encouraged to help customers in financial hardship and may waive the fees to let you leave.
  • Check the “Switching Credits”: If you must pay an exit fee to leave, some providers (like Sky and EE) offer “switching credits” of up to £300 to help cover the cost of your final bill from your old supplier.

Summary of Protections

  • Fixed Prices: The monthly cost is guaranteed not to rise mid-contract.
  • No Exit Fees: Most social tariffs are rolling 30-day or 12-month contracts that you can leave at any time for free.
  • Re-verification: Your provider will usually only check your eligibility once a year. If you stop receiving benefits, they will move you to a standard plan, but they must notify you before the price changes.
